English Vinglish truly marks the
rebirth of a star 'Sridevi' who has returned to film industry after 15 years at
the age of 49. In her heydays of the eighties she ruled Bollywood, Kollywood, Tollywood
often driving films to blockbuster status without bothering who the hero was.
The movie has been directed by Debutant writer-filmmaker Gauri Shinde.
The movie is about the story of Sashi (Sridevi), a middle-aged Maharashtrian housewife who
earns her own money by making sumptuous ladoos and selling them to the experts.
Sashi is ridiculed for their poor linguistic skills by their English speaking
family. Sashi finds herself as an object of potshots by her husband (Adil
Hussain), who has little respect for her real talent and her 7th grade daughter
who feels ashamed to even introduce her mother to her school folks. Sashi flies
off to New York to lend a helping hand at her niece’s wedding where she smartly
grabs the opportunity to enroll herself into English speaking classes. In no
time, Sashi becomes the most committed student in her class and starts watching
English movies to improve her English reading and writing skills. She does
everything more significantly to earn respect that she duly deserves from her
family. In her pursuit of literature, she finds her classmate, a Frenchman
(Mehdi Nebbou) getting attracted to her plain simple personality. Despite
several barriers, Sashi manages to achieve her goal.
Sridevi is so charming and hats off to her for
the awesome performance. She has not acted but lived as Sashi with the right portions of susceptibility,
control, and quiet strength, delivering a performance that is nothing short of
perfect. With the meaty role in ‘English
Vinglish’ after 15 years, post watching the film, I have just one word for the
actress - FLAWLESS!
‘English Vinglish’film is a poignant dollop. No doubt, the film
leaves you with a big smile on your face. There's also a delightful cameo by
Amitabh Bachchan for Hindi and by Ajit Kumar for South Indian languages. Both
the actors are good at stealing the scene with flawless comic timing. Overall, ‘English Vinglish’ is a
complete family entertainer and worth every penny! Yes, Sridevi is back!
If I am asked to describe Anurag Basu’s ‘Barfi’ in a single word ‘Masterpiece’. Storyline - life is about finding happiness in small things rather than in being wasted in lusty pursuits. The acting of Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra leaves the audience speechless. Cinematographer Ravi Varman captures the lovely North Bengal in a splendid way and each frame looks like a beautiful painting.
The movie narrates the story of the character Barfi who has a speech and hearing impairment who lives with his ageing father in Darjeeling of 1970s. Barfi is innocent and simple hearted guy who is more appealing for his cute Chaplin-meets-Mr. Bean acts. Shruti, a typical rich girl who visits Darjeeling loses her heart to him despite the fact that she is engaged to a wealthy man back in Kolkata. After a short romance, she leaves Barfi heartbroken to marry the moneyed man as she chooses money over true love. There comes an autistic Jhilmil Chatterjee belongs to an affluent family in Darjeeling where her sensitive needs were barely cared by her family. Meanwhile Barfi’s father is battling kidney failure and Barfi looks for all ways to get the money for his father’s treatment but in vain. So he decided to kidnap Jhilmil for money with the help of his friend. As story moves on Barfi and Jhilmil realize that they are made for each other to share their lives. On the other hand, , Shruti feels that even after 6 years of marriage still she has strong feelings for Barfi.
Ranbir Kapoor delivers an award-winning performance through the character ‘Barfi’. No doubt Priyanka Chopra who played the role of Jhilmil Chatterjee would be the award winning woman and bollywood newbie South Indian actress Illeana D’Cruz sticks to her character and adds beauty to the magical tale of Barfi. The story moves back and forth from 1978, 1972 and 2012 in an easy-to-follow fashion and the film’s songs are simply touching.
Overall ‘Barfi’ is a classical sculpture and a sweet treat to audience with perfection in casting, acting, comedy, romance, emotions, story, screenplay, cinematography etc. Kudos to the director for his romantic comedy movie with an unforgettable character ‘Barfi’.
