FACEBOOK SHUTS DOWN ON 15-MAR-2012

It may be very sad news for many people but still they have to accept the truth. Yes. Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in March of 2012 since he finds very difficult to manage the site and has become too stressful. Facebook users will no longer be able to access their accounts after March 15th of next year. So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. Once Facebook goes out of business, you won’t be able to get them back.
Zuckerberg said that it was a difficult decision to shut down Facebook yet he wants to get back to his original where he believes that his happiness lies over there. In a private phone interview, he said “I personally don’t think it’s a big deal. And to be honest, I think it’s for the better. Without Facebook, people will have to go outside and make real friends. That’s always a good.” Some students have expressed the shock and some parents are happy too with this decision.
Facebook is currently ranked as one of the wealthiest businesses in the world, with economists estimating its value at around 7.9 billion. Those in the financial industry are criticizing Zuckerberg for walking away from a multibillion dollar franchise. Zuckerberg replied “I don’t care about the money. I just want my old life back.”

The magnificence of this service is that it works on virtually any GSM mobile phone, even if it is not internet-enabled. It makes use of Unstructured Supplementary Service Data service protocol to communicate with service provider’s computers. We can expect other GSM service providers also to follow the same route shortly.

INTERNET SAFETY FOR KIDS

The enormous growth in science and technology opens doors to information for students but they have to be careful as it can also reveal private information about them. Especially teenagers are getting trapped through some social networking sites like Facebook, Orkut by revealing their personal information. Though parents are aware of those serious consequences, it is possible for them to restrict only to an extent. But here after they could track all the activities without spying their kids with the help of parental control software designed to provide internet safety for kids. This type of software requires no installation or download. It is even being provided by Facebook through online protection tools to prevent threats like cyber bullying, addiction and abusive comments on Facebook.  This tool enables teens using Facebook to quickly report any violation to Facebook officials. Similar to antivirus and firewall protection, there are some companies offering internet security software with enhanced logarithms looking for risky behavior across the web which also tracks the information shared by your kids on any social networking sites. This avoids children getting restricted by parents for their internet usage and also helps parent to relax as it ensures that their kids are under their control without giving up their privacy and respect.

FACEBOOK App Developers on Suspension

Facebook has suspended some of its application developers for selling their user information to some data brokers. Some Facebook applications were transmitting user IDs to be used for name identification and in some cases their friends name too to some advertising and data firms. It seems that data broker was paying developers for these user IDs and Facebook confirmed that no private user data was sold and confirmed that transfer of these UIDs did not give access to any private data. That also assured that they will be taking action against these developers by instituting a 6-month full moratorium on their access to Facebook communication channels. Those developers are not working in the top 10 applications on Facebook Platform and will be under pressure if they are not in compliance with the Facebook policies. Still Facebook officials are not able to find out the data broker exactly and in an announcement they said, "Never sold and will never sell user information". Also they added that they have a zero tolerance for data brokers because they undermine the value that users have come to expect from Facebook.

‘Bom Sabado’ Worm Crashes ORKUT

Looks like social networking sites have become soft targets to the hackers. Have you heard the word "Bom Sabado". It means “Good Saturday" in Portuguese, which is the also the official language of Brazil and known to very few percentage of people in the world till last week. But now everyone would have known this not as a word, but as a dreadful worm virus which crashes Google’s Orkut service. It is a cross-site scripting attack which caused orkut flooded with "Bom Sabado" scraps. How it works? Basically it is a JavaScript based worm that spreads itself through Orkut scraps. This worm is an auto generated message which might look like just another scrap from your buddy. The scrap actually embeds a malicious JavaScript code which infects the profile of the person as soon as he opens the scrap page. Soon after this, the code is executed and it will make the user join bot communities automatically. The worm then starts posting similar scraps to the user's friends using his name, thereby spreading it. The worm also steals browser cookies.

Incase if you were affected by this, make sure you clear all your browser cookies and your Orkut password and security question has been changed. It is advisable not to visit any Orkut profile till this script is blocked. Recently, Twitter faced an attack by hackers after a security flaw was unearthed by a user. Soon after, Facebook faced its worst downtime in four years and now its Orkut's turn to be under attack. That is why I mentioned social networking sites as soft target. However they have taken effective steps to solve this issue as soon as possible.
