HONOURARY AWARD FOR KALAM

India's former President A P J Abdul Kalam was conferred with honorary Doctorate of Laws by Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland. Dr Kalam, known as India's 'missile man', received the honour from Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Peter Gregson for "distinction in public service. Through Dr Kalam's outstanding abilities as a world statesman, scientist, educator and visionary, he has inspired millions in his native India and around the world. Dr Kalam's visit is a tangible example of the educational, research, business and cultural links between India and Northern Ireland.This university has produced the world's first low-cost technology to provide arsenic-free water to people in India and has been selected by the British Council to provide groundwater management trainngs in regions polluted by arsenic.

Dr Kalam is also an award-winning aerospace engineer who played a leading role in many of India's most recent technological breakthroughs, including the landing of India's first unmanned lunar spacecraft in November last year.In 2007, he was awarded the prestigious King Charles II medal of the Royal Society and in April this year he became the first Asian to receive the Hoover Medal, America's top engineering prize.

SEHWAG REPLACED BY KARTHIK IN WC 20-20

Virender Sehwag has been ruled out of the ICC World Twenty20 in England after failing to recover from a shoulder injury he sustained during the IPL in South Africa. He will return to India after consulting specialists in England and will be replaced by Dinesh Karthik, who gave a good contribution in IPL. A BCCI media release speculation over Sehwag's fitness that he didnt bat on the tour until Tuesday morning. The uncertainty over his injury led to reports of a rift between him and the captain MS Dhoni.Things weren't much clearer today, either, at the pre-match press conference - in fact the drama descended into farce. Dhoni refused to clarify the ambiguous situation, saying "anything related to fitness there will be a press release from the BCCI". Under normal circumstances, the loss of Sehwag, a proven match-winner in any form of the game, would be a massive blow to India's strategy. Sehwag sustained the grade one tear to his shoulder during the IPL and the coach Gary Kirsten said that he had been kept in the squad in the hope that he would not miss the entire tournament.

Google launches search tool 'Google Squared'

Google, already the king of Internet search, has rolled out an experimental new search product called "Google Squared." Google Squared does not provide a list of links to Web pages, like with a traditional Google search, but presents information derived from a query in a spreadsheet-like grid called a "square." Users of google.com/squared can then build, modify and refine their "square" through further Web searches. "Unlike a normal search engine, Google Squared doesn't find webpages about your topic -- instead, it automatically fetches and organizes facts from across the Internet," Google said in a preview of the product last month.Google Squared could be useful when a user needs to make multiple searches to find the information they want.It essentially searches the Web to find the types of facts you might be interested in, extracts them and presents them in a meaningful way.The Mountain View, California-based Internet search giant cautioned that Google Squared remains experimental and the technology behind it "is by no means perfect."

THE FORMULA ONE STEERING WHEEL

The steering is designed to concentrate controls as close to the driver’s fingers as possible. The steering can be clipped on and it is removed when the driver gets in or gets off the car.

AIR FRANCE FLIGHT - MYSTERY

Air France flight AF 447 carrying 228 people disappeared early Monday four hours into its 11-hour flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris after the Airbus A330 encountered severe turbulence over the Atlantic and reported technical failures. The search continued through the night for the missing plane that disappeared over the Atlantic, but little hope of the 228 people on board would be found alive. Recently the search aircraft on Tuesday found a seat and other debris from a plane in a remote stretch of the Atlantic where the flight carrying 228 people disappeared.The "small remains" were discovered around 1,100 kilometres (680 miles) off northeastern Brazil, some 650 kilometers northeast of Brazil's Atlantic island of Fernando do Noronha.The items included a seat from a plane, bits of white material, an orange buoy, a barrel and some oil and kerosene slicks, grouped in two floating patches 60 kilometers apart, according to an air force statement. But they are not sure that the debris was from Air France flight AF 447 and there were no signs of survivors.The officials needed a piece that might have a serial number, some sort of identification to be sure that it came from the missing airliner. However the items were found near where the Air France plane sent its final message: an automatic data signal telling of multiple electric and pressurization failures.A Brazilian air force statement said the debris was discovered at 0300 GMT Tuesday by an Embraer R-99 AWAC plane fitted with onboard radar that detected metallic and non-metallic items floating in the ocean. So still the mystery of the missing flight continuing and may god give strength and courage to the families to bear this sadful disaster.

HOW CANCER SPREAD IN BRAIN

For the first time, a research at the Oxford University shows how cancers that spread to the brain establish themselves and begin to grow.The article published in the journal PLoS ONE, has identified the mechanism that metastatic cancer cells use to anchor themselves to blood vessels in the brain.This could allow new drugs to be developed to stop cancers from spreading and growing in the brain.

Metastasis is the process where cancer breaks out from where a tumour has initially grown and spreads to other parts of the body.It is the reason why cancer is fatal.Brain metastases are the most common malignant tumours of the central nervous system(CNS) outnumbering by ten times those that originate in the brain.Over 20 per cent of all cancer patients will eventually develop metastatic cancer in CNS. Dr W Shawn Carbonell says that "Metastasis to the brain is essentially terminal, and very little is known about the process by which it occurs.But by quickly remedying our lack of knowledge, we hope to be able to come up with new and better ways of treating such cancers."

The Oxford University team finds an answer for how do tumour cells grow in the brain? They looked at a comprehensive range of cancer cell types from humans and mice breast cancer cell lines, melanoma cells and a lymphoma cell line and examined how the cells establish themselves in the brain in laboratory studies, using both mice and human tissue samples.Previously it had been assumed that tumour cells grew on the cells that make up the grey and white matter of the brain: the neurons and glial cells.However, no proper studies have been done before and there is little evidence to back this up one way or another.Instead found that cancer cells start to grow on brain's blood vessel walls and not on the nerve cells.

Google wins back domain from Class XII boy

Internet search engine giant Google has won a lawsuit against a 17-year-old schoolboy (Herit), who had acquired a domain name, googblog.com. To get the rights of the blogsite registered in the name of Herit Shah from Surendranagar, Google had moved the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), a specialised agency of the United Nations, on March 26, 2009. This week, WIPO, which works for developing a balanced and accessible international system in the field of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), ordered Herit to transfer the domain ownership to Google.The domain name — googblog.com — had become a bone of contention between him and Google, as ‘goog’ is the latter’s stock sticker at the NASDAQ. Herit, however, said he had no regrets for obtaining a domain name somewhat similar to Google.
